Social distancing on the job

Social distancing is the utmost importance right now and is especially crucial for businesses who are remaining open during the COVID-19 pandemic, including construction sites.

What is social distancing?

Social distancing is minimizing close contact with others, including isolating in your home or at least staying 2 meters (6 feet) away from another person.

How can I practice social distancing at work?

First and foremost, avoid personal contact with your co-workers and clients. This means no touching, including fist bumps and handshakes

You should also avoid gathering in groups, and if possible, host meetings online, by phone or ensure there is safe distancing in small group settings.

How can I reduce my risk of infection?

Make sure to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

You should also avoid touching your face, eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands. As well, make sure to cover your mouth and nose with the crease of your elbow or tissue when you sneeze or cough, and immediately wash your hands afterward.

Take time each day to clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and do not share food, utensils or equipment with co-workers.

Familiarize yourself with the practices and procedures your employer has put in place and make sure social distancing policies have been discussed and are understood by everyone.

Employers should ensure handwashing stations and alcohol-based sanitizer is on-site and readily available. Proper handwashing techniques must be encouraged and understood, and sites may want to consider posting proper handwashing techniques where employees can see them.

PPE equipment should be used when possible and replaced or cleaned regularly.

Employers should also make it known that employees are not to come to work if they are sick and that they are familiar with the symptoms of COVID-19. Those who don’t feel well should also be self-isolating if necessary and know who to contact should they need to get tested.

Health and safety on the job site matter at all times, but they matter even more so during a pandemic.
